The UEFA Champions League, officially UEFA Champions League (UCL), successor to the European Champion Clubs’ (same name assigned to the trophy until the present day: Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens) Cup is a competition organized by UEFA since the season 1955-56 (from 1992-93 in its current format) for football clubs that achieve higher ranks in domestic tournaments. The prize, the European Champion Clubs Cup (better known as the European Cup) is the most prestigious trophy in European football.
structure
Originally known as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup (in Portugal, as in Brazil was known as the European Cup), or simply as the European Cup, the competition began in 1955/1956 (In 1955, Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid president along the Gusztáv Sebes created a tournament based on Latin and Mitropa Cup. throughout the ages, this tournament was successful and became the Champions League, now managed by UEFA), in the form of qualifying with two games, where teams were playing a game at home and another in the house of the opponent.
The team that had the best results passed to the next round.
The format and the name was changed in 1992/1993.Com radical change and evolution of the system over the years, the competition currently consists of three phases for classification, with a stage race in groups (where teams play against each other , on a “round-trip”) and then four phases of final playoff. All phases of classification disputes and type playoff consist of two games except the final, which is a simple game played at a predetermined site.
The entry in this competition is limited according to the UEFA coefficient of the last five years, not counting the previous, each confederation has the right, at least for a seat in the first round of classification. The better the ratio, the more open spaces; Real Madrid CF leads the ranking achievement of the competition, with ten titles. After him, the most successful teams were AC Milan (seven titles), Liverpool FC and FC Bayern Munich (five titles), Barcelona and Ajax Amsterdam (four titles).
rating
The rating for this competition is determined by the positions of the clubs in their respective countries, through a quota system. The countries with the strongest leagues have more vacancies in the competition.
For example, the three strongest national leagues, UEFA rankings for the 1st and 2nd place have direct classification and the 3rd and 4th enter a qualifying round. The weakest leagues have no direct access to the group stage of the Champions League, having their champions to compete in the qualifying rounds.
There is one exception to this rule: the current winner of the Champions League, typically have direct access to the group stage.
For the season 2005/2006, Liverpool won the right to enter the first round, as was the champion of the previous season, and despite being in fifth place in the Premier League. Unlike what happened in 2000 (reported below), the fourth-placed Everton also qualified for the competition (but was eliminated in the qualifying round stage). Because of that England had 5 teams in contention.
The last time a situation like this happened was in 2000, when Real Madrid won the title, but finished sixth in La Liga. Because of this, Real Zaragoza was forced to play in the UEFA Cup. Two years later, Zaragoza were relegated, at the unhappy turn of events that some fans believed to be a direct consequence of the loss of prestige and monetary income.
2014: Spanish Final in Lisbon, with “La tenth” achievement.
After eliminating Schalke, Borussia Dortmund and Munich, Real Madrid arrived at the Grand Final as favorite for the size of its rival, Atletico Madrid, but that eliminated AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea, passed as the only undefeated team in the UEFA Champions League 13/14, caught the game started, with many fouls and tackles, the anxiety of the players that until now was to be expected and was being considered normal.Mais than lifting his second title of the year, Real Madrid can extend the curse of athletic, never having won a Champions, and bring a film back to the head of colchoneros. 40 years ago, in one end of the Champions League the team had played, the title was also secured until the last minute, when Real Madrid scored a goal and ended the party that colchoneros preparing for their first cup of Europe forcing an extra game, won by the Merengues 4-1.’s dream was shattered once again dramatically. No matter what happens going forward, generating Simeone carry with this brand forever.
